The Piping and instrumentation diagram (P&ID) is defined by the Instrumentation and Control Institute as follows:

A diagram showing the interconnection of process equipment and the instrumentation used to control the process. In the process industry, a standard set of symbols is used to prepare process drawings.

What is important to remember is that P&ID is not to scale.

===== Use of P&ID in Heat Tracing =====

P&IDs are used to identify lines that require regular temperature monitoring ((//typically marked with a dotted line//))

It enables the designer to understand flow paths.

Flow paths help to determine the circuit quantity, especially when using line sense control.
